The word-limit for a SOAS dissertation is 100,000 words including footnotes and bibliography. Appendices are not included. The registry is not lenient about this, so don’t presume that you will be able to flaunt the regulations.
- I recommend targeting 8,000-10,000 words for a regular chapter (considering you have 6-8 chapters), if you add approximately 5,000 for the introduction and conclusion, you are just under the limit.
- Make sure that in the word count tool bar in MS Word ‘include footnotes and endnotes’ is ticked.
Be very conscious of the word-limit from the very beginning. It is very easy to end up with 20 or 30 thousand more words and then facing the arduous task of performing surgery on your flesh and blood, your thesis! (as I did!!!).
